“La Nina” affecting Tuna Catches in parts of the PNA
November 29, 2011
The past few months Nauru, one of the PNA states, has been benefitting from an unusual high level tuna catches. It may give you the perception that there is a general abundance of the tuna stock. However, the current large quantity of tuna is not related to tuna stock increase, but purely to the environmental phenomenon “la Niña”.

PNA countries, such as the Solomon Islands, Nauru and Marshall Islands enjoy higher catches during La Nina years since the species migrates towards those areas influenced by better oceanographic conditions. The best water temperatures for tuna life and to feed in.

The issue now is that this recent positive change in this pattern has brought many tuna seiners rushing into these specific waters for the past few months, and that way causing a much more intensive fishing activity than normal. Therefore, the tuna boats have exceeded the maximum days they were allowed to fish in these EEZ’s much faster and as a result, these fishing grounds had to be closed earlier than usual for all tuna purse seining activity. Starting Jan 1st they will be opened again.
